Some have jobs, some are looking for one

According to ISTAT data in 1991 there are 139,283 teenagers between 15 and 24: of these 26,8% represent the active population and only 10,2% have a job. Instead, 2,9% are looking for a new job while 13,8% are looking for their first employment.The data ISTAT inform us also that 23,2% of teenagers in this age range represent the unemployed population: 18,5% are students; 23% are housewives; 0,4% are retired and 2% have other occupations.

Productive areas of industrial sector

In the province of Lecce many industries in the fields of food, textile, clothes, leather and wood have a strong economic influence. This sector holds 68,1% of the total of the industrial activities, the employees are 55,5% of the total occupied population.
A significant data is that in the textile/clothes/footwear sector the percentage of employed in Italy is 16%, while in Lecce it is 33,4%.
The area of Lecce is characterized by the prevalent presence of small firms (10-10 and 20-99 employees). The Province of Lecce present levels of industrialization similar to the average for Puglia and with a felter result compared to Southern and national statistic.

The footwear sector

The province of Lecce represent one of the most important for the production of footwear in Italy. In the areas of Casarano and Tricase are currently present 2 leader firms: Filanto in Casarano and Patù; New Adelchi in Tricase; Adelchi in Specchia, they are large firms.
Small and middle-size firms have developed around these, producing accessories.
The sector occupies 6.800 employees in all the province and it presents an average size firm of 58 employees; just one firm occupies over 1.900 employees.
The production of footwear in Casarano and Tricase is geared to the export of 90%: Germany, France, United Kingdom and countries of the North Europe, with the inclusion also of the countries of the East: Hong Kong, Usa, Canada and China.

The Textile/Clothing sector is the one that presents the greater employment rate even if it is greatly characterized by work on behalf of a third party.

Such as the production of mattresses in the area of Galatone. It is remarkable the production of flowers consented in the district of Leverano.

In the flower Market of Leverano there are 580 producers and 210 dealers. Finally, in the Foodstuffs and agricultural produce sector the wine production is remarkable with a lot of cooperatives wine growers associations engaged in the qualification of local productions national and foreign markets.

Maglie – Poggiardo

- extractives activities and manufacturing of the "PIETRA LECCESE".

The foodstuffs and agriculture produce activities are especially in small many township with a less number of inhabitant with enterprise of small dimension.

The production foodstuffs and agriculture produce are specialized especially in the manufacturing of products of horticulture (preserves) and in the manufacturing of the dives.

The extractive activities and manufacturing of PIETRA LECCESE is concentrated especially in the township of Lursi, Melpignano, Lorigliano e Otranto.

In the end, it is necessary notice the presence of many enterprise of arts and crafts that work the handmade for building industry (shop windows, metal and wood products).

Galatina

The presence of one of the greatest cement factory of southern Italy in the area of Galatina is significant. Finally there is a blooming art and craft production of artistic "terracotta" objects located in the area of Cutrofiano.

The biggest factory in the area of Lecce is FIAT HITACHI which produces tractors.

Its presence in the area has favoured the growth of mechanical businesses.
